America's Largest Underground Lake -- Sweetwater, TN

A few years ago we took a summer road trip to the Tennessee mountains. The Great Smoky Mountains that is. We usually wait until the peak months (September - November) to visit the mountains but really wanted to experience the mountains in the Summer. Like every trip, when planning I was searching for unusual places to visit... and I sure did find it.

We started our trip in Pigeon Forge, TN! If you've never been-- add it to your travel list! It reminds me of Myrtle Beach, SC but mountain style. We planned some things to do in the Sevierville/Pigeon Forge area but what ended up being the highlight of our trip was a little over an hour away.

AMERICA'S LARGEST UNDERGROUND LAKE!

The Lost Sea is located in Sweetwater, TN and is a must see! Listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. You start out your 1 hour and 15 minute tour with a walk through the caverns and very interesting stories are told. It includes a lot of walking (3/4 mile round trip) but well worth every step. You begin your tour walking down a yellow tunnel... pictured below.

At one point in the tour, you get to experience complete darkness. Very cool! You will see different caverns rooms and rare rock formations.

Our tour guide was great at explaining the history of the cavern and lake. You will also get to see an old moonshine still!

When you get to the bottom, you will take a boat ride in the Lost Sea. This was just the icing on the cake. During our boat ride we saw lots of fish! They said the fish are blind because it's so dark down there. 140 feet down.  The water is a beautiful blue.

This was the experience of a lifetime and for sure the highlight of our trip! Something you will experience, never forget, and be talking about for years to come. If you are ever in this area or TN in general, I would make it a point to visit The Lost Sea Adventure. Adults and kids alike will enjoy this spectacular sight to see!
